I had originally planned this review for Halloween, but here in New York, we were unfortunately devastated by Hurricane Sandy and did not have Halloween this year. I must say, it has been heartbreaking yet amazing to see my community pull together like we have. I hope all of you have been safe and dry,and for those not affected I hope that you never have to go through anything like it. Halloween is, of course, one of my absolute favorite holidays. It's just a fun day, one where we can all explore our inner child and dress up if we want to, decorate, and eat candy. It's also a great time for horror movies and all things gory and ghoulish. It really saddened me not to see any kids out in their costumes trick or treating this year, but I want to thank the movie Trick r' Treat for keeping a smile on my face and really making me feel some of that Halloween spirit despite the situation we all were in.
Anyway, Trick r' Treat was my Halloween movie choice this year because I keep hearing all the hype about how this is apparently the best Halloween movie since the original Halloween. I would have to agree. This is indeed a fantastic Halloween film. It is not scary nor does it try to be, but this film truly captures the essence of Halloween night. The film is a horror anthology along the lines of Creepshow. It consists of several short stories which are interwoven rather cleverly. In the first short, we have a woman returning home from a party of some sorts with her partner. She clearly does not have Hollywood spirit, and may have to pay for it one way or another. The next short consists of a high school principle and his curious, morbid hobby. He has a crazy old neighbor as well, the kind who would chase kids off the lawn with a broom. He also plays a part on one of the shorts. The next stars the lovely Anna Paquin from True Blood as a young girl with a deadly secret looking to have some fun on Halloween. The last short focuses on a group of teenagers who try to play a prank on another girl, but the plan backfires. All of these shorts are clever and unique in their own way, and it was really a lot of fun to see each of these stories come together at the end. Then course there is Sam. Sam is the creepy little bag-masked thing pictured above. I thought Sam was a great villain, if you want to call him that. Sam may be a villain, but really all he wants is his candy. Is that so wrong? That may spell trouble for all those grumps out there who don't have any Halloween spirit, but it is certainly a ton of fun for those of us watching.
Trick r' Treat is a highly enjoyable Halloween-themed film that really delivered. I can certainly see this movie come under fire from fans for certain things, as would any film that has received a lot of hype. I want to re-iterate that this is NOT a scary movie, in fact I felt there were more comedic elements than anything. Does that mean it's a bad horror? Not in my book. I used to love the original horror anthology films like the Creepshows, Tales From The Crypt, Two Evil Eyes, etc. This film was a nice return to that format, skillfully interweaving several stories into one big, Halloween-themed explosion. All of the answers you were looking for will be revealed at the end. Trick r' Treat is probably not a film I would watch outside of the Halloween season. I think I enjoyed it much more because I was in the spirit so to say, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't recommend it for you right now. Trick r' Treat is a really fun film all on its own. It's far from the best movie I've ever seen, but it is far from a movie you will regret seeing. Don't forget to give those kids some candy when they ask for it. You never know whose face is behind those masks.
